Why nothing on this site says “is taxed”

On the difference between what becomes relevant and what applies to you.

The map on the front of this site says what becomes relevant. It never says what is taxed. That was deliberate, and it is also how we work.

A tax position is a conclusion drawn from facts: how long something was held, what it cost and whether that can be shown, where you were resident for the year, what was withheld, which year each step fell in. Change one and the conclusion can change. Two people with the same headline situation, an inheritance, an exercise, the sale of a flat, can end up in different positions because the facts underneath were different. A number offered before those facts are known is not advice. It is a guess wearing the clothes of advice.

What can be said honestly in public is still a great deal: what becomes relevant when something happens, the order the questions arrive in, and which considerations different situations share. None of that depends on your facts, and all of it is useful before the facts are in. That is what the map is. The rest of the work needs your documents and a conversation, and it is that half that produces a number.

So when you write to us, you do not need the terminology, or to know where your situation fits. Describe what is happening, as you would to a colleague. If anyone gives you a figure before they have asked you a single question, treat it as the start of the questions, not the answer.
